1er août 1914 : la France décrète la mobilisation générale. Le 2 août, Genevoix, brillant normalien qui n'a pas 24 ans, rejoint le 106e régiment d'infanterie comme sous-lieutenant... Neuf mois plus tard, il est grièvement blessé et est réformé. Fin de la guerre pour le jeune Genevoix. Entre ce mois d'août 1914 et les trois balles qui l'atteignent, le 25 avril 1915 dans la Tranchée de Calonne, le jeune homme aura participé à la bataille de la Marne, marché sur Verdun et, surtout, pendant quatre longs mois, défendu les Eparges.
Sur cette colline meurtrière, les combats se font au corps-à-corps, à la grenade, et sous le feu des obus. Entre l'été et le printemps revenu, il vit le quotidien du fantassin, la boue, le sang, la mort, alors que le commandement croit encore à une guerre courte. 1916 : Genevoix publie Sous Verdun, écrit en quelques semaines et largement censuré. Suivront Nuits de guerre (1917), Au Seuil des Guitounes (1918), La Boue (1921) et Les Eparges (1923), réunis sous le titre de Ceux de 14 en 1949.
Il s'agit de l'édition définitive retravaillée par l'auteur. Cette nouvelle édition, préfacée par Michel Bernard et suivie d'un dossier réalisé par Florent Deludet, comprend des photographies du texte censuré, des carnets de Genevoix, de sa correspondance et de ses "camarades du 106", véritables héros de ce récit. Ceux de 14 n'est pas seulement le plus grand classique sur 14-18, c'est l'ouvrage d'un immense écrivain.

Le lieutenant Jean Brillant est sans aucun doute l'un des plus illustres militaires canadiens de la Première Guerre mondiale. Son existence de combattant (1916-1918), c'est avec ses frères d'armes du 22e Bataillon canadien-français qu'il en partage les épreuves, les souffrances et les espoirs. Jean Brillant occupe une place discrète dans notre mémoire collective. Un siècle après sa mort, les quelques lieux publics rebaptisés en son honneur constituent toujours la mesure de sa renommée, et son histoire demeure essentiellement mal connue.
Luc Bertrand propose le portrait d'un homme humble, mais d'exception, qui mène une guerre sans haine dans un univers impitoyable. Un combattant que le sort destine d'emblée à un ­dernier assaut. Diplômé en sciences politiques, Luc Bertrand a passé de nombreuses années dans le milieu gouvernemental, dont cinq au Cabinet du premier ministre du Québec. Auteur de plusieurs romans, biographies et essais, il signe avec Le dernier assaut - La vie du lieutenant Jean Brillant, VC, MC, son 22e ouvrage.
